When Will the Wayanad Tunnel Open?

The dream of a “Ghat-free” journey to the hills of Wayanad is finally taking shape through the Western Ghats. The Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi tunnel road, commonly known as the Wayanad Tunnel, promises to transform connectivity in the region. But the biggest question on everyone’s mind is: When Will the Wayanad Tunnel Open?

According to the latest project timeline from the Public Works Department (PWD) and Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), the Wayanad Tunnel Road is expected to be completed by early 2030.

  • Construction Start: Work officially began in late 2025, with major rock blasting starting in March 2026.
  • Contract Duration: The construction contract, awarded to Dilip Buildcon and Royal Infrastructure, spans 4 years (1,460 days).
  • Projected Completion: Barring any environmental or geological delays, the tunnel is slated for an opening in 2030.

Why Is this Wayanad Tunnel Necessary?

The current route via the Thamarassery Churam (Ghat Road) on NH 766 is plagued by:

  • Severe Traffic Jams: A single breakdown can cause hours of congestion.

  • Landslides: During the monsoon, the Ghat road often becomes dangerous or impassable.

  • Hairpin Bends: The 9 hairpin bends are difficult for heavy cargo and emergency vehicles.

The new Marippuzha Meppadi tunnel will provide an all-weather alternative, significantly boosting the export of Wayanad’s spices and coffee while providing faster access to specialty hospitals in Kozhikode.

Current Route vs Tunnel Route - Wyanad tunnel

The Wayanad Tunnel Road has moved beyond the planning stage and is now actively under development. Although the expected opening around 2030 may feel far off, the start of rock blasting in 2026 marks the beginning of the most challenging phase. Once completed, this project is set to become the true “Lifeline of Wayanad,” significantly reducing travel time to Kozhikode and Bengaluru.
